Sogol Zabihi
Founder and Designer

American born Iranian, Sogol Zabihi is the founder behind Jewels, and jewelry and accessories brand at the forefront of the new generation of fashion and design in the Middle East.

Sogol describes her brand as "retro, trend and rich, relying on a heightened sense of bright colors. She pulls her inspiration from everything she sees around and the results as you can see is fun, wonderful designs she is very proud of.

I was fortunate enough to pull Sogol away from her surroundings long enough to Chat it up with me.

Ms. Bridgé: When you were growing up what did you dream of becoming?
Answer: I always saw my parents working for themselves so I had that instilled in me from a young age. Although I didn’t always know I’d eventually be a jewellery designer, subconsciously I think I knew that one day I would also create something that was my own.

Ms. Bridgé: When did realize you had a talent for desigining?
Answer: After graduating from university in 2003 I returned to the UAE and took note of the gap in the market for young and trendy jewellery and therefore decided to source small up and coming labels that would bridge this gap. As a result, my love for jewellery sparked, uniting my more creative side with my entrepreneurial background from my studies. I began to realize my raw talent and passion for designing jewellery and began focusing on my own line – JEWELS; a brand for a younger generation, for every kind of girl.

Ms. Bridgé: What's your biggest challege designing your own line?
Answer: From my experience with JEWELS, I think the biggest challenge with designing your own line is to ensure each collection is as strong as the previous one. I need to make sure customers are inspired and impressed every month! I also think that as a designer, one becomes very meticulous about little details, some designs never feel finished – so it is definitely a challenge sometimes to take a step back, when you live and breathe your designs 24/7 and still have to see it with a fresh pair of eyes each time.

Ms. Bridgé: How do you want women to feel when wearing one of your designs?
Answer: The ethos behind JEWELS is that it is made for every kind of girl; there are designs and colours to suit every taste. JEWELS is meant to make girls feel confident, sexy and comfortable.

Ms. Bridgé: What celebrity would you like to see wearing your designs and explain why?
Answer: Sassy, fun, and daring are just some of the adjectives that best describe the perfect JEWELaholic girl, celebrity or not. In my opinion, some celebrities that encapsulate these traits are Beyonce, Miley Cyrus and even Lady Gaga!

Ms. Bridgé: What do we have to look forward to from your next collection?
Answer: The new collection; “Arabian Princess” combines the originality of JEWELS’ signature avant-garde designs with mysterious Bedouin Arabian notes to produce a truly luxurious and unique collection that even a princess would adore!

With it's increasing popularity in the media and amongst fashion-conscious women of the Middle East, JEWELS' exclusive designs have already made their way into treadsetting boutiques including, Bloomingdales, Sauce, Tigerlily, Etoille, Ounass and Harvey Nichols in the UAE, Pink Diamond and YAZI in Bahrain, Mosaic in Kuwait and online at www.aura-b.com and many others across the region.

Beauty tip:

Seasonal changes can affect your cosmetics.

Leaving your makeup on a cool countertop or in a warm car can temporarily change the consistency of your make up. Most cosmetics are designed to be applied at room temperature. Application will be different if you try to apply your makeup outside of normal temperature range. It doesn’t mean that the cosmetic is poor quality, old or needs to be discarded; it means you need to allow the cosmetic to be brought back to a normal temperature before using. For example, a cosmetic pencil left on a cold countertop may feel dry and scratchy when applying. The application will be uncomfortable. A simple solution is to warm up the pencil before applying. You can roll the pencil between your hands to warm it up. Draw a few small lines on the back of your hand to warm the core. Once the core is warmed, the application should be silky smooth as usual. If your pencil core is left is a hot steamy bathroom, the point may melt and smear during application. Allow the pencil to cool before you apply. Use of electric means to heat or cool your cosmetics is not recommended. Fortunately the “pencil me in” eyeliner pencil cores are hard enough that the points won’t break during application yet soft enough for easy glide-on use.

Has your makeup gone to your head?

Barbers and stylists are designing patterns into the hair with edgers already. Kids young and old are having designs etched into their haircuts for their sports teams; leaving the school letter and number on their heads. Women are joining in and asking for their hair to be buzzed down one side of their head, sometimes underneath a cute haircut for a funky yet flexible look. They are requesting designs like stars, hearts & even lightening bolts.

Graff*Etch is the hot trend-art of lining the hair pattern with color. Filling in these designs with colored pencils and really making the design stand out! It's a temporarily way to express yourself. The color washes out and the hair grows back.
