Living on Key Biscayne, Liza Lamar and Tara Kunkel were inspired by a very unique
lifestyle of resort year round. Whether traveling to the Caribbean, Europe, or just
being right at home, they were always inspired by their tropical surroundings.
Question: Where did you get your inspiration for your 2010 collection?
Answer:
I believe inspiration can come from so many places. When you are designing it is hard
not to be inspired by so many things. Sometimes it’s a photograph or a painting,
sometimes it’s just a color you see somewhere or a person that sets it off. We create
inspiration boards that can have anything from magazine tear sheets to something we
find on the street. This season we created a board to reflect the life of the laid back
woman that represents Liza + Tara. We based the collection on this woman's personality.
We wanted the clothes to reflect everything about her and her travels. We used bright
colors to express confidence and a variety of prints to reflect the places she has been.
Question: What adjective would you use to describe this collection and explain why?
Answer:
Adventurous is the inspiration for our collection. This season is all about a confident, flirty, Island hopping woman.
Question: How did you decide on what colors to use?
Answer:
Each season we start on a clean sleight and choose our prints to complete our concept
board for the collection. This is one of the most important parts of the design process
for us and it can take a lot of time to find exactly what you are dreaming about.
Once you find the right prints and colors the collection begins to come alive.
Question: When deciding on the material what did you look for?
Answer:
We mainly use silk charmeuse, silk chiffon, and light weight cottons to create our collection. We do not use synthetic fabrics because we feel that it is important for the clothes to be light so they can breathe.
Question: What makes your line stand out from the rest?
Answer:
We try and create interesting silhouette's that stand out next to other lines. we also use metallic leather detailing here and there which is unexpected and pops, especially when mixed with bright colors.
Question: What celebrity would love to see wearing one of your designs and explain why?
Answer:
I would say Molly Sims or Kate Hudson. They both seem to have an easy laid back style to them. I can just picture them barefoot on an island. They are casual and never over styled or over done, and they both seem to dress in a way that reflects their personalities.
Question: Tell us what we have to look forward to from your next collection.
Answer:
Spring/ Summer is going to be very exciting. We are take an old classic concept and giving it a whole new modern punch. It has been fun mixing and matching the ideas together. The prints are to die for, you will have to wait and see!
