Question: Where did you get your inspiration for your 2010 collection?
Answer: My inspiration came from Africa. I've always wanted to do an all nude, or neutral collection. when I saw this snakeskin fabric that’s when I decided to focus on Africa. The land, the people, the artwork, the whole essence of Africa!
Question: What adjective would use to describe this collection and explain why?
Answer: I think the word Cosmopolitan best describes this collection because it has a wide variety of styles that any woman, any age range can pull off and make it her own!
Question: How did you decide on what colors to use?
Answer: I actually thought I was going to do all browns and earth tones but when I was shopping for fabric I saw colors that reminded me of Africa which sparked an interest. I have a blue/black combo section that is just amazing! The fabric and the styles represent the artwork of Africa. Seeing this collection will make anyone see Africa through my eyes!
Question: When deciding on the material what did you look for?
Answer: I generally was looking for something that was not typical! Most people would do cheetah prints or zebra. I wanted to do more traditional fabrics that actually make people step outside the box when wearing swimwear! I really wanted a different feel for this collection. I let my imagination run wild. Of course all the fabrics are functional...just not typical!
Question: What makes your line stand out from the rest?
Answer: This line is different because of the fabrics, the combination of the fabrics and the overall actual design of the garments. These suits are not your typical bandeau or triangle top suits. These are actually suits that are inspired by the animals and culture of Africa. Definitely look-out for different cutouts, necklines and silhouettes!
Question: What celebrity would love to see wearing one of your designs and explain why?
Answer: If I had to
pick just one, I would say Rhianna. I love her style...she is very edgy, yet
sexy! She always has a certain swagger in whatever she has on and I think she
could totally pull off any of the looks in this collection.
Question: What do we have to look forward to from your next collection?
Answer:
My next collection will be a tribute to Barbie. As some of you may know, that was what I wanted to do initially! So I’m making a collection that would be my typical "barbie doll". Its definitely going to be very glamorous! All different shades of pink...very girly, but with a Keva J edge! Its called Pretty In Pink "Ode To Barbie"! So stay tuned!
Muted metallic hues and structural silhouettes similar to New York City’s skyline intertwine with gold and silver hardware to compose the Fall 2009 Metallica collection. Shape and construction are inherent in Johnson’s 25 signature pieces, which are translated into couture swim apparel. Straying away from evanescent trends, Johnson explains “The success of a fashion designer is based on innovation and ideas – you must steer from tradition and boundaries by creating your own developments – making you the innovator.” Ideal for chic and daring fashionistas, KEVA by Keva J is the antidote and appeals to their longing for flaunting edgy pieces.
From the Spring 2009 Rastafarian line “Rasta Hampton” is a sleek, solid white monokini with structural cutouts with a left-centered, tried-and-true Jamaican-hued ribbon to grace your shoulder. With an elegant structural style “Rasta Chic” is a yellow canvas constructed into a two-piece with a diagonal silver hardware conjoined by a traditional Jamaican-hued ribbon to support the halter-like bikini.
Metallic bonding is found throughout the Fall 2009 Metallica collection. The “Steelistic” bikini emulates a Chinese Yin Yang symbol by featuring radiant gold and silver intertwined with metallic hardware. One-shouldered and elegant, “Gold Haze” is everything of its name by including gleaming gold and silver fabrics with a side cutout to differentiate it from classic one-piece designs, while “Chromatic’s” halter-inspired teardrop design offers a pixilated pattern. Johnson’s philosophy is, “Fierce. Edgy. Unique.” and fluidly flows throughout the Brooklyn-bred designer’s collection of avant-garde swimwear, also influenced by an array of cultures including her Caribbean descent. KEVA by Keva J is the antidote for ground-breaking, couture women’s swim apparel.
