Facebook Login Deception

Fury at Facebook as login requests “Government ID” from users

29 OCTOBER 2013 - 12:47AM | POSTED BY STEVEN RAEBURN |

Thousands of Facebook users have vented their fury at the social media site on Twitter after they were locked out of the site, and were requested to provide “Government ID” to log back in.

Similar mass lockouts have occurred on Facebook in the past, most recently in

January this year. At that time, the ID request was in response to claims that users’ accounts had been hacked.

“This is just a general practice for both Facebook and Instagram to request photo IDs for verification purposes depending on what type of violation may have occurred,” Facebook said at the time.

This is the first mass lockout and ID request to have taken place since the NSA government data trawling revelations, and it seems to have outraged users to a greater extent.

Facebook has issued an apology for locking a number of its users out of the social networking site and asking them to provide a 'Government ID' to log back in.

A Facebook spokesperson explained to The Drum: “Yesterday, we showed an account verification message to a very small portion of our users unnecessarily. We promptly removed the messages when we discovered the error. We're sorry for any inconvenience we may have caused.”

The Drum has learned that there was no security issue prompting the message and that is was a mistake on Facebook’s part.

Earlier today The Drum reported that Facebook users who were greeted with the error message when trying to log-in to their accounts had vented their frustrations via Twitter.
