DJ Freez

started as a break dancer in the early 80’s then started DJing shortly after and soon became a popular house party DJ in the mid 80’s. After winning some local DJ battles he landed a small club appearance in the early 90’s. This led him to landing a resident position in Pennsylvania at the famous Chameleon Club. This position lasted 15 years. While at the Chameleon Club his Friday night dance party became the first dance party in the central PA area to be broadcasted live on Clear Channel’s WLAN FM97. He then started Freez Entertainment (a party promotion company) booking such groups as: The Sugarhill Gang, the Cover Girls, The X-Ecutioners, DJ Craze, Lil Suzy, The Rock Steady Crew and many more. He then added weddings and events to his resume as he started doing weddings, holiday parties and events. In 1996 DJ Freez took on a 3 Month Club residence in Chile, South America. He worked the club life 6 nights a week in the tourist area of Pucon, Chile.

Upon returning to the States In 1997 he opened up a DJ Pro Retail Store “The 12 Spot” selling DJ equipment, records, CDS and clothing. Then he launched his DJ school based out of the retail store. The School taught upcoming DJ’s how to time music, mix, scratch and break beats.

From there he landed his first NYC gig with Atomik design for the Sony Music Christmas Party in 2002. After the Sony party Freez worked venues in NYC such as Capital & Madison Square Garden doing preshow and after show parties for the TBS/TNT Network. These events included artist and events such as Sting, The Eagles, Lenny Kravitz, The Youth Aids Benefit and many others. He has also done events with or for Paris Hilton, Brooke Hogan & reggae legend Beenie Man.

Up Close and Personal.....

Question: How long have you been a DJ?
Answer: I Started DJing in 1983 for my Break Dance Crew called “The Midnight Rockers”. From that time on it was a hobby or a part time job. In 1996 I quit my job and became a full time DJ. So the answer would have to be 27 years since day 1 or 13 years full time.

Question: Why did you pick this particular field?
Answer: Actually I didn’t pick this field at first, it picked me, let me explain. When I was a break dancer our crew traveled from venue to venue battling other crews and some break crews had their very own DJ and custom mixes. Well, we didn’t but since I had some records and a turntable I started DJing for our crew. The next thing you know, break dancing took a back burner and DJing came to the forefront of my life.

Question: Growing up is this what you wanted to be?
Answer: Not at all, I was a troubled child and a runaway so I truly had no aspirations of becoming a DJ. Only after I started getting involved in parties, DJ battles and events did I know that DJing was my calling.

Question: What's the most challenging part of your work?
Answer: I’d have to say the most challenging part of my career is when I get to a dance event and no matter what I play people don’t want to dance. Getting the first person or couple to the dance floor can sometimes be a challenge.

Question: What do you find the most rewarding?
Answer: I love when a client’s event is a success or when I have a packed dance floor. When I have a floor full of people who just want to have a great time and let loose, the energy builds and I feed off of that energy. Or when a body builder or cheerleading group loves the custom mix I’ve created, it’s a great reward to know I’ve done my job.

Question: Tell us how you started on the 5 o'clock Traffic Jam on 99.3 kiss FM.
Answer: One day a good friend of minewho works for Clear Channel’s WHKF 99.3 Kiss FM gave me a call. He said, “Freez I have a great opening here at the Station for a new mix show we are starting and we’d love for you to create the custom mixes for it”. After we discussed the details and the time slot I took the position and have been the Friday 5’oclock traffic Jam DJ since July 2008. The show now holds the top position for the most listeners in our region.

Question: Were you a fan of the show before they approach you for the job?
Answer: Truthfully, I didn’t even know the show existed. Usually at 5PM on a Fridays I’m busy getting ready for my Friday night gig.

Question: If you weren't a DJ what do you see yourself doing?
Answer: Ha, that’s a good question, I’ve thought about opening a Café or a few other small businesses’ that I’d rather not discuss. (Just in case I decide to open one of them I want it to be the best kept secret, shhhh).

Question: What makes you stand out from the rest?
Answer: Well, there are various types of DJ’s out there, for example, just to name a few. The Wedding or Corporate DJ, The Scratch DJ or Turntablist, The Club Dance Party DJ, The Production Remix DJ and The lounge or Event DJ. What I’ve done is I’ve managed to take on all of these various styles and use them where ever and whenever they’re needed. So it would have to be my diversity and experience that separates me from the rest.

Question: What adjective best describes you?
Answer: INNOVATIVE!

Question: What advice would you give to other aspiring DJ's?
Answer: Remember the Client always come first because if they don’t you’ll be playing for yourself.
